Maria Golici: Ukranian Nationalists Camp

Ukraine has a Nationalist camp for kids which range from ages 8 - 18. The kids inside are taught to shoot rifles to defend from the Russians and spread nationalist ideology. " We never aim guns at people, but we don't count separatists, little green men, occupiers from Moscow, as people. So we can and should aim at them," instructor Yuri "Chornota" Cherkashin told them. They have maintained links with the government and The Ministry of Youth and Sports earmarked about $150,000 to fund of the youth camps built by Nationalists. The kids get woken up in the middle of the night from the stun grenade and are required to hold heavy rifles all day. They are taught that LGBT rights are a challenge and something they need to be aware of. 18 year old Mykhailo said, " Every moment things can go wrong in our country. And one has to be ready for it. That's why I come to this camp. To study how to protect myself and my loved ones."

This article was written on November 12, 2018, at 4:20 PM. The Ukranian Nationalists were important in World War II. They were against the Soviet Union. They first toke up arms with Nazis and later Soviets.  It shows that their nationalist's groups have always been strong and motivated. In my own opinion, I don't agree with their beliefs and the way they choose to see the world so negatively.  I also was shocked that an 8 year old or a kid any age would be sent to a camp to hold guns bigger than them and have to see such violence at that age of development.

  1. I want to say that I'm suprised by something like this, but quite honestly I'm not. Kadar Price

  2. I find this extremely interesting actually. I never would have guessed that that is their daily life but I'm not surprised by its existence.

  3. This is fascinating to read about. A camp like this seems like something you'd read about in a dystopian book, like the Hunger Games. It's just not right that kids are being taught hatred and violence for no reason.

  4. Kids should be out playing and living their childhood right, not this! I hope this camp dissolves sooner or later.

  5. I find this story sad, but intriguing. No kid should have to go to camp because they need to learn how to protect their families. Stories like these always make me realize how blessed I am to have been born in my family.
