Youtube Shooting
In the recent shooting at Youtube headquarters, three people were killed before the shooter turned the gun on herself. Police identified the shooter as a woman in her thirties named Nasim Najafi Aghdam. They haven’t officially announced a motive, but various youtube accounts have been found that supposedly belong to the shooter. These accounts are in three different languages, and included an art page. Her complaints to google, the parent company, concerned how many views the videos had. She claimed that the site was blocking and restricting her videos so they won’t get as many views.
As stupid as her (maybe) motive is, it doesn’t really surprise me. Technology and social media play such a huge role in our society that it’s no surprise that it may motivate a shooting. Unlike past shootings, there doesn’t seem to be any signs that could have prevented this from happening. Does this mean that mass shootings are beginning to trend? If that’s the case, no special screenings or mental health checks are going to help prevent any more from happening. I think that this shooting and ones like it needs to be seriously considered when debating guns and safety.
