Meet The Marine Who Could Be The First Black Woman General
According to a press release from the Department of Defense, On Tuesday, Marine Corps Col. Lorna M. Mahlock, was nominated for brigadier general. This would make Mahlock the first Black woman ever to hold the position. Although, according to Nora Bensahel a military expert at American University told the Marine Corps Times, “The entire culture of the Marine Corps is a hyper-masculine culture,” this promotion will allow women new opportunities. This will also prove that even though it’s more diffult for women to make strides in the U.S. armed forces, it has happened before and is possible.
This article is centered around the idea of empowerment. It relates to Apush during the women’s rights movement, as women of color and women as a whole prove there abilities to hold positions of importance and power. These demonstrations occurred in the past and this article shows that they will continue to take place until the voices of women are truly heard.
