Maggie Gibson : Sources: Trump to pick ExxonMobil CEO Tillerson as secretary of state

President- elect Donald Trump will select Rex Tillerson, Exxon Mobil CEO, as his Secretary of State. There have been many criticisms of this choice, considering Tillerson has had no formal policy experience and his opinions on things such as NATO. His appointment reflects Trump's former statements on how he hopes to increase the closeness in relationship with Russia. Tillerson has dealt with many world leaders on behalf of business, but never for anything else. His businessman point of view reflects Trump's interests in pursuing free trade and business. There have been many criticisms of the nomination: no experience, pro-business, pro-Russia, and not to mention Tillerson is just another cookie cutter old white millionaire in Trump's cabinet.
The author obviously doubts the soundness of logic behind Tillerson's nomination, sharing the many problems this could cause and the many sources of distrust and concern about his nature. I think this nomination was to be expected from Trump- the pro business and pro Russia was a major theme in his campaign. However, it is worrying to me that this man will control the nation's foreign policy without knowing how to go about things diplomatically instead of a businessman, because the difference between saving lives and saving money is a large one. This can be synthesized to dark horse presidential candidate, James K. Polk.

  1. With every new nomination, it gets scarier and scarier. America may be capitalist-centric, but the majority of it's inhabitants are hard working people from all different walks of life. Politicians for the most part try to keep representation for everyone. A millionaire business man is only concerned with his business and money.
