Sophia Jalilvand: Search New Zealand: Dozens of aftershocks follow deadly earthquake

Summary: New Zealand has experienced a series of earthquakes on the South Island. This triggered a tsunami right afterwards, and there have been at least two deaths so far. The first earthquake was of 7.8 magnitude. A 6.2 magnitude quake came afterwards. 42 seismic aftershocks have been reported just in the past day. New Zealand is part of the Ring of Fire and sits in a collision zone between the Indo-Australian and Pacific tectonic plates. However, these quakes have done some serious damage with the aftershocks.

Analysis: Such natural disasters happen, but it is truly disheartening to see all the people affected by it. The earthquakes have done billions of dollars worth of damage, and we are still not sure when the aftershocks will end. Hopefully they will finish out soon and the land will stay peaceful for quite some time. Thankfully few people were injured or killed, although I wish the numbers had been at 0 and I hope that more people will not be reported with injuries or death from this event moving forward.

  1. It stinks that anyone died, but I'm also glad that it wasn't too many and hopefully there won't be anymore.
