Seanelle Higgins: A Right To Choose

Summary:
Recently , Donald Trump has spoken about two controversial topics: same-sex marriage and abortion . He has stated that he is "fine" with the courts ruling of rights for same-sex couples. However , he does plan to appoint justices to repeal Roe v. Wade, a supreme court case giving women the right to abortion. The justices that Trump hopes to appoint all see the same-sex marriage rulings and the abortion rights affirmation as a failure. They plan to closely evaluate the Constitution to determine their standings on the issues. Critics of Trump's opinion ask the question: "Where in the constitution does it allow same-sex marriage, but not a woman's right to choose?" When confronted about the daunting fact that women could not have access to abortions, he simply said, "Well, I guess she'll have to go to another state."

Analysis: I think this standing on abortion is incredibly misogynistic and dangerous . Women all around the world are in need of abortions because of financial reasons, medical reasons, or simply because she does not want to bear a child. In most cases, women are aborting their child because they already have one, and cannot, under any circumstance have another. Other situations would include: a baby as a result of sexual assault, a baby while the woman is in school, and a girl cannot keep her baby safe in the environment around her. Abortions can keep young teens from being thrown out or dropping out of school, and they can also save a poor child from being forced into the system where they desperately await to be adopted . I do not think that pro- life people are pro- life. I believe they are simply pro- birth  (in most cases). If they were truly pro- life, they would help to pass bills that assist women in paying for vitamins, doctor check-ups, baby clothes, and other expenses. If a person is truly pro-life, they would care about the baby's wellbeing after it is born to ensure a healthy, stable, life. Currently in America, maternity leave is also not offered with pay. Some countries provide women with a full year of paid leave. In America, women are forced to either leave work without income, find an expensive daycare or a steady, reliable sitter. I truly believe that a woman is smart enough to handle and direct her body responsibly. I trust that if a woman really wants an abortion, it is probably for her wellbeing and the child's that she does not want to bring into the Earth unprepared.

  1. I agree that women should have the right to choose especially in a situation like rape. I do think there should be certainty restrictions like after a certain point in the child's development you should not be able to abort it.
