Police in Ohio Release Photo of A Couple who Overdosed with Child in the Car

by Nadia Blanton

Summary:
Police in Liverpool, Ohio decided to shed some light on the opioid epidemic by posting a two photos on Facebook that rightfully served it's purpose. The photo shocked many who were not only disturbed by the overdosed couple but by the dangerous circumstances the young boy, at just age four, was put into. The two photos were not blurred or censored because the message was to be sent clearly to the public about the consequences of addiction.

Analysis: Not only does this touch the topic of the opioid epidemic and the need of spreading awareness but how the media influences public views on issues and the line between public and private information. The photo does not really serve it's purpose when it is blurred or censored but there is reason to be concerned about protecting the child's privacy.
The opioid epidemic is a tough issue due to the many contributing factors of the problem. Unfortunately, the problem is doctors cannot always tell when their patient is lying or is addicted or lying because they are addicted. When a patient informs the doctor about how their pain is increasing they may be telling the truth but this still only increases their chances of addiction due to an increase in prescription. It does not stop there, if a patient is cut off from his prescription there is a great chance they'll turn to illegal and more addictive, dangerous drugs.
