Kate Kahle, After a Perilous Journey, Hatians Find Doors To The US Shut

On Thursday, The Obama Administration announced that due to the influx of hatian immigrants to the United States, it was tightening the immigration policy on hatians.  They went to Brazil to find refuge from the desolate shape that their native Haiti was left in after an earthquake in 2010. Then when Brazil's economy started slipping downhill they spent many months crossing the borders of 7 or more countries to reach the border in Tijuana. Crossing the border is supposed to be the easy part of this journey, but this change in immigration laws has left hundreds of haitians in flux, waiting at the border to begin their new lives. Especially now, there is an especially large wave of immigrants coming into the united states due to the upcoming election. Immigrants want to get into the country before Donald J Trump is possibly elected and 'The Wall' is built. Mexican officials say that the Hatians are a strain on the city. as many as 1000 are still in Tijuana, crowding the migrant shelters, and it is estimated another 40,000 could be en route.
I think that while america may be becoming strained by so many hatian immigrants, there is definitely a better solution than the one that the Boama Adminstration recently put into effect. They should at least have put out notices several weeks before the laws went into effect so that would-be immigrants have time to make other plans before making the journey to the border. I also think that it is wrong t restrict immigration based solely on country of origin. It would be fine to allow only a certain percentage throught the border, but I think it is discriminatory to not allow people entrance due to country of origin.

  1. I agree with your statement that there is definitely a better solution. And I believe that not letting people into the U.S. due to their country of origin is a hateful and/or racist act.

  2. I enjoyed reading this. My parents were talking about this recently and I agree that more thought should have gone into the movement. However, this is such a huge issue that I am not sure there is a real solution. America was founded as result immigration so this will always be an issue and argument needed to be solved.
