meditation instead of detention

Robert W. Coleman Elementary School has started a new type of treatment on behavioral issues. Instead of putting the misbehaving kids in a detention, where they will end up just sitting there bored and frustrated, they direct them to the "Mindful Moment Room" instead. The kids are encouraged to practice breathing, meditation and talking through the problem. The teachers and stuff are surprised that the students actually sit and try meditation, but they do with enthusiasm.  This is helping the kid's focus and attentiveness in the classroom. The children who are learning these beneficial skills can use them for the rest of their life and teach others the same techniques. I think this is a positive way to redirect student's energy and help promote healthy mental health.

  1. I think that this is a great solution to behavioral problems in schools! This will be a more productive way to improve a child's mental state.

  2. I love that public education is becoming more aware of how to handle children and their fragile mental health with care. This is a great step in the long process of fixing American education.

  3. This goes along with rehabilitation over punishment, which is something I believe in strongly. Instead of just getting angry at someone for mistakes, we need to teach them how to correct them. Things like detention don't actually show people alternative options to the choices they made, leading them to make those same decisions again.

  4. I think that this is a wonderful idea. People are more likely to respond to the punishment if it is positive, shows them what their mistakes were, and teaches them what the right thing to do is.
