Isaiah Washington's Facebook plea to boycott Monday - Skyler Tepedino

Summary: According to Isaiah Washington's Facebook post, he states that all African Americans should not go to work, school, shop, or do any sort of work that day. It just so happens that that day is tomorrow, September 26, 2016 and it will be interesting to see who shows up to school and for work. Additionally, it is also the morning of the first debate between Trump and Clinton. The reason he brought this to everyone's attention is because he thinks that if all African Americans we to boycott Monday, the Nation would realize how important and influential African Americans are to our community.  There are too many African Americans angry, sad, and disgusted by all the violence that is going on in the country today. In Washington's past Facebook posts, he makes references to the #RIPTerenceCrutcher and #HandsUpDontShoot because of what happened September 16, 2016. He states that his goal is to keep the people in America safe and to make an impact on the judicial system that is oppressing American labor rights and "our bodies and money from it… for 24 hours," says Isaiah Washington. Many people are tweeting that they will boycott and not go to anything tomorrow. They are also very enthusiastic about the situation and are promoting it on most social media sites. Washington is definitely making a big impact on society and influencing more people to speak out and say what they actually want to say.

Analysis/Synthesis: This article was written to not only inform but to make a statement to the country that if we don't do something about all of the violence in general, more people will become angry and move towards more heinous acts. This makes me think back to all the rebellions that happened back then---in particular Bacon's Rebellion. In 1676 the colonists in Virginia under the control of Nathaniel Bacon against Governor William Berkley. It was a political battle between the upper class and the farmers, indentured servants, fisherman, and slaves. The colonist rebelled because of economic issues such as declining tobacco prices, growing competition between Maryland and the Carolinas, increasing English market, and the raising prices from English manufactured good or mercantilism. They are alike because they have people rebelling for things that don't make certain people happy and with the hope of getting what they want in the outcome of it. I think that people need to come together and behave more like the country of the people, for the people and by the people.

  1. I like that he is taking a peaceful approach at protest and I agree that black voices need to be listened to more closely. However, I feel like boycotting something with more of a meaning behind it would speak louder than to avoid all tasks on Monday.
