Lilly Anthony-Group says cancer-causing toxin found in NE Ohio drinking water systems

Summary: Recently in Cuyahoga County, OH an environmental group has tested water sources all over northeast Ohio and all but one have tested positive for Chromium 6. This is a cancer-causing toxin that consists in many Americans drinking water. It can also be found in cities across the U.S. such as Phoenix, Los Angeles, Houston and St. Louis. Scientists say that extremely low levels of this toxin can cause cancer in people, so California has been the only state so far to address the amount of Chromium 6 put in water. In Cleveland, OH their main water source is Lake Erie, providing water to 1.5 billion people in the northeast Ohio. The water they process from Lake Erie comes from up to 3 miles offshore and is then processed and filtered before being pumped into the reservoir. The Cleveland Water Department invested over 1.6 billion dollars into improving treatment plants and distribution systems.

Analysis: This article was posted on Tuesday this week after the environmental group discovered more evidence that high levels of Chromium 6 were found in Ohio water sources. Though this article was put out to let Ohio citizens know to be aware of what their drinking, the audience is also intended to be for any American who is at risk of drinking unsafe water. Prior to this article I knew cancer was at risk when drinking water that wasn’t clean, but now that the water that’s suppose to be safe isn’t, makes me worry about my own city's water sources. Cancer is a fearful thing in our society because it’s very difficult to survive from. When something like cancer-causing water is brought up, the fear grows in people of feeling unsafe and catching this deadly disease.  In U.S. History, the Industrial Revolution was a cause of major polluted waters as the economy grew, such as the Chromium 6 that has polluted waters across America as well.

  1. I had never been made aware of this subject, and it too makes me worry for my safety as well as those affected by this.

  2. I think that in order to fix this problem our government needs to work to make sure water that is considered fit to drink is fully filtered.
