Sophia Jalilvand: Racial disparity emerges in rare child suicide rates

Summary: New studies have been showing some disturbing results regarding suicide rates. Suicide is extremely rare among children, yet there has been shocking data related to the few cases that exist within children. 36.8% of the cases have been black children. The majority of them are black boys that hang or suffocate themselves. However, in all groups studied, Native Americans were the highest at risk for suicides. The article goes to explain warning signs to look out for if any child you know may be contemplating suicide.

Analysis: This is a tragic article because it shows how minority races are largely at a disadvantage. The article speculates that suicide rates are so high in black boys because they are exposed to more violence in their living environment. I believe that more affirmative action programs will help with this disparity as to give unfortunate members of minority groups more of an opportunity to get out of their poor situations.
