Why Trump owes it to voters to release tax returns - Maggie Gibson

This article, on the CNN Money website written by Jeanne Sahadi, explores why Donald Trump, a presidential candidate for the upcoming 2016 election doesn't feel the need to release his tax returns. By doing this, he is defying a tradition starting in 1976 where every presidential nominee and their running mates have made their tax returns public. The author explains his possible reasons for not releasing his tax returns, giving his opponents more fuel to fire at him, or give tax experts an opportunity to point out what the IRS may have missed. However, a very important point is brought up: he is no longer just a private citizen and a businessman. He is the man running for president, and those candidates are expected by the public to be transparent about their finances so voters can verify his claims. Additionally, his tax returns would help voters understand more in-depth his policies to reform the tax code so the public can see if his motivations are not anything other than he says.

This article's purpose was to inform readers of why Trump should release his tax returns. It doesn't persuade or dissuade people from voting for Trump, and it is unbiased in that way, but it does question his motivations for hiding them and brings to light the possibility of dishonesty in his claims about his income. Voters deserve to know who they're really voting for, and who they're supporting to represent our country, and this article is in support of the voter the importance of the role it plays in elections and how our country is run. This relates to how important voters are in controlling the election, and how the president has to be supported by the majority of people, not just strong support from only a quarter of the population.

  1. I can agree that Trump is not actually a million air if he released his tax returns however i don't think its because of the election but that he doesn't want people to think lesser of him for not having the money he claims to have.
