Frats Under Fire- by Rachel Devine (6th)

Several days ago, the SAE chapter at the University of Oklahoma had a video released of its members chanting racist threats, some involving lynchings. The chapter was disbanded and their house has been shut down. Since then, many of the chapter members and alumni have been receiving death threats from all around the country. Another chapter of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity is also under fire right now at the University of Washington for racist protests. Investigations are being done to see what is true and what's just talk, but regardless of the horrible things said, all members of the frats are being given due process.

This present-day issue about racism can be compared to the discrimination faced by African Americans throughout much of our history. While things such as Jim Crow Laws no longer exist, it's obvious that the issue of racism is still very prevalent. It's extremely upsetting to see the video of the frat boys' chants on the bus, and their actions cannot be brushed under the rug.

  1. What they did was terrible and ignorant. I agree that it totally relates back to the discrimination that African Americans endured through the time periods we've studied.

  2. Once I heard about it, I was really disappointed about how they still showed signs of racism. We should be over that by now but apparently some people think it's "funny."

  3. The racist threats made by this fraternity are unbelievable. I do, however, think it is unfair that other fraternities (that had nothing to do with this incident) are receiving hate threats from people around the world. Ignorant decisions made by a few people shouldn't cause those who weren't involved to become victims.

  4. It is terribly inappropriate for them to even think that kind of language is ok. They have, like many other Americans, forgotten the seriousness behind those words and how they can affect someone.
