"Can China Promise Blue Skies for 2022 Winter Olympics?" - Addison Norman

China has asked to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, but the games are reluctant because of China's air quality. It isn't hard to see that Chinese cities struggle with air pollution. Due to the high population and coal power plant the pollution as a whole continues to grow in cities. The Olympics games still haven't decided who will host the games, but there are a number of other counties still in the race. The Chinese made some progress cleaning the environment before the 2008 olympics. The country reduced the amount of cars that could run and closed some coal factories in 20018, but considering that the Winter Olympics are in February it doesn't seem likely that the plants will close. Now China claims it will be replacing coal power plant with gas plants that emit less pollutants.
Starting in the 60's we see a movement begin regarding the nations environment. It was a time people became more aware of the problems pollution created, especially after the industrial revolution. In this movement president Nixon created the Environmental Protection Agency and other laws like the Clean Air Act.
