Apology For Racist Chant -Hadassah Lai

Over the past week, the nation was shocked with the uploaded twenty second video of a bus containing students from Oklahoma University yelling a racist chant. The main student in the video was shown standing up leading his fellow Greeks in a racist version of "If You're Happy and You Know It", replacing the words with vulgar words. The main student has been identified as a Jesuit Preparatory graduate, and has been shunned by the school and expelled from the University. Another student has been identified as a Highland Park High School graduate, and has also been shunned from the school and expelled. The two young men and their families have issued apologies to the nation, saying that it was a stupid mistake and that now they are suffering harassment from the general public. Blogs and journalists have written back saying that it wasn't a stupid mistake, it was something done on purpose and that racism starts at home. Also, the students and their families have no right to claim that they are somewhat victimized, because they have victimized a big population of our country and there is nothing they can do that can undo that.

I respect this nation for reacting as they did. If somehow, the people of this nation had jeered along and supported these two racist, ignorant, and pompous men, we would be in a much bigger catastrophe. Although this was not physical violence, this has a very close relationship with the Ku Klux Klan. Although the KKK took theirs to the extreme with physical violence, these students used their words to diminish others, which is equally as bad. I do not sympathize with them or with their families because this is something that even young children can't get away with. So to the people telling them to grow up, that's not the problem. The problem is that these men think that they are above others just because of their color, in a country that has claimed everyone equal. So forget about shaming their high schools and university, they have shamed the entire country as a whole making this horrible incident unforgettable.

  1. I don't think they are sorry for doing it, I think they are sorry for getting caught..

  2. I agree with Jack, if they felt any reservations about the chant then they wouldn't have done it. They also wouldn't have filmed it nor allowed anyone to post it. They were obviously ok with making these comments. I just hope that they now see the error of their way and will try to make a change in their lifestyle.
