A Current Event - Iris Hughey p.5

A few days ago in Ventura, California, a dog rescued two swimmers from an ocean's current. The two swimmers had swam out a couple hundred feet and were then too exhausted to fight the currents that were going against them. As they began to yell for help, Dave Mecham watched as his dog, Nico, bolted into action. Nico swam up to the couple, allowed them to grab onto his chest and back, and he led them to the shore (with the assistance of the boogey boards they were using). Mecham and his girlfriend, Vivian Clark, said that Nico had never even really swam in an ocean before, let alone save someone's life. The two unnamed swimmers were filled with gratitude as the dog assisted them back to safety.

It's so nice to hear a happy ending to a news story every once in a while considering how many tragedies we hear of on the news every day. It's amazing to me how many people have been saved by dogs, whether it be in snow, fire, oceans, or other disasterous events. I hope the couple that were rescued learn from this incident and don't need to be rescued from the ocean's dangerous currents again.
