Madison Harvey: Burkinis In France

Summary:  In France there are more than twelve cities, along with cities in other European countries that have placed a ban on women wearing the burkini, a bathing suit that covers the women from head to toe only showing their faces. There is also another veil the women wear only revealing their eyes. In France a group of police officers asked one of the women wearing a burkini to take it off so they could see her face, considering all of the ISIS attacks they wanted to be able to detect her identity. The burkina has many set backs, due to all the clothing.  It could cause heat strokes and is a hazard to their health. In the Muslim community the women are told what to wear from the men. They are told to dress modestly, but the word modest is interrupted differently among people. Rather than telling the women what they shouldn't wear they should target the problem at the sources telling the men that they shouldn't be allowed to dictate what the women should wear. In a country as free and liberal as France women should be aloud to dress the way they want.

Analysis: The author of this article is Frida Ghitis she is a world affairs columnist for the Miami Herald and World Politics Review.  The purpose of this article is to address awareness of the real problem of this issue.  People need to know the women that wear this type of clothing have no choice in what they wear. After reading the article I have a better understanding and I agree with the solution she has given. This relates back to women's rights in the United States. How now they have to right to vote, the right to own property and the right to run for office. I would like to see that for all women in all countries as it is here in the United States.

  1. I choose a vary similar article addressing more the gender role issues rather than the clothing. Its interesting to gather different views from the same cause creating a reverberation of these different ideas.

  2. This article really shows how women are being discriminated outside of the U.S. I really loved how you connected it to the 19th amendment, proving that women are more than just property and can be useful just as they are here in the United States.

  3. Madison I think it's really and truly a shame that freedom of expression is so rarely enforced by people outside of the US and that a person can't enjoy a day at the beach w/o someone physically and verbally accosting them.
