Emma Lochabay- Important Companies sign Equal Pay Pledge on Important Day

On Women's Equality Day, twenty-nine different companies, including Facebook, Target, General Motors, and Apple in the United States, have signed the White House Equal Pay Pledge. This pledge was created to ensure that all Americans, no matter what gender, are paid fairly. Women generally are earning 79 percent of what men are earning. Furthermore, when you investigate circumstances where both genders work in the same profession and have similar work experience and schooling, women still earn only 95 percent of what men are earning.

Before reading this article, I knew little about the unfair pay between men and women in America today. After learning more about the subject and how signficant companies are doing something to improve this problem, I am very interested in how this effort will affect other companies and help to improve the situation overall. The announcement of these companies’ commitment to equal pay was posted on Women's Equality Day. This is very significant because it adds to the many significant events that have happened on this day, such as the passage of the 19th Amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote. This article was written to remind people of this significant problem of unequal pay to women in our country and hopefully encourage companies to make a similar pledge. Many people suffer from unequal gender pay, and as citizens, it is our moral obligation to do something about it, including making a similar pledge to that made by twenty-nine large corporations committing to equal pay.

  1. I think this is a nice effort but I'm interested in what the companies are actually going to do about the pay gap specifically, because it's not just about pay, but also promotions and self-advocacy differences in women and men. I feel like this was done mainly for good PR for those companies, and no real change will be affected, but maybe I'm just being cynical?

  3. I totally agree with you Emma, many women are suffering from this unequal gender pay! People should get paid on how diligently they operate in their occupation not gender or color! It's really sick on how America functions, this mentality should end now!

  4. It's nice to see big corporations are finally doing something about unequal pay. I loved reading this, because I was very unfamiliar with how exactly this was going to fall through on Women's Equality Day. Plus, I loved celebrating this day by wearing white!

  5. One step closer to fair gender pay, which has been far over due. Great to see these advancements for the cause.
