Linnea Soderlund 4th: Surgeon General on Zika, Opioids, and EpiPen Prices

Summary: In this video from MSNBC, they talk with the U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, about the spread of Zika virus in the Florida area and what steps the state and the CDC are taking to fight the outbreak and develop a vaccine. He also touches on the recent rise in opioid addiction and his letter to all medical professionals outlining their duties in the fight against prescription drug abuse. Towards the end, he discusses the sky-rocketed price of EpiPens in the back-to-school season and how outrageous the situation is.

Analysis: I completely agree with what Dr. Murthy has to say about these topics. Our healthcare system is in quite a rut at the moment and he is raising awareness and coming up with solutions to many problems we face.

Synthesis: The Zika virus can be connected to Malaria and how it affected many early settlers of America, most notably in Jamestown. It also reminds me of the Ebola outbreak of 2014, which we experienced here in Dallas so we can sort of feel for the Floridians in their time of struggle.

  1. I agree that there's a lot going on healthcare wise in the U.S., and it's good to see that people are trying to bring attention to this issue.

  3. Yeah.. The U.S. and healthcare aren't exactly the closest of friends. I'm happy you chose this topic, not as many people are worried about this as much as they should be.

  4. I strongly agree with you on this one Linnea. The U.S. and other Euro-centric countries have been NOTORIOUS for trying to block entire ethnic groups from basic necessities such as healthcare, voting, food, jobs etc.

  5. So glad that you decided to write about this. EpiPens are too expensive especially if they could save a child's life. The government is not the best when it comes to healthcare programs. Mothers aren't even allowed a single day of paid maternity or sick leave.
