Kyla Thomas, 1st period- No.1 killer: Cancer is catching up to heart disease

Summary: Research shows that cancer is the number 1. killer in the country. Previously heart     disease was, but in 22 states, more people died from cancer during 2014 than from heart disease. Part  of the reason why cancer's death rate is  rising at such a rapid rate is because it is harder to cure for it. Cancer replaced heart disease as the leading cause of death for Hispanics in 2009.  Because heart disease can be treated more effectively than cancer, it is logical to believe that cancer is the silent killer and if not caught early on, it will attack. The take-away of the article is to be aware of any diseases or sickness that you may possibly have and take the necessary precautions in order to be exempt from both diseases.

Synthesis: Cancer is a disease that has taken the lives of many and is really common in the present day. Similarly, small pox is an Old World  disease that was brought to the New World, that devastated the Native Americans. This disease was carried the Europeans when they came to America in the 1500s. Before Columbus, what would be modern America had 10 million Indians. By 1800, the native population shrank by 90% due to disease. Although in two different time periods, diseases are still present and they can kill people in a certain area of not treated.

Place and Time: Updated 12:41 PM ET, Wed August 24, 2016. The date and time shows that the information is updated and relevant to the present times. The study is not outdated.

Prior Knowledge: Before reading the article I thought that heart disease was the number 1 killer but with the rates in cancer death rising, that changed in a short period of time. This information was shocking and eye opening for me. My great-grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer in November, but is good that she caught it in the earliest stage possible so that she has a greater chance of it being cured.

Audience: The article is written for the people who have been diagnosed with either heart disease, cancer, or are in the age group of those who are at a high risk for it. It did its job by conveying the message that cancer is slowly becoming the number 1 cause of death which should spark an urge in people to get checked.

Reason: This article was written to raise awareness of diseases such as cancer and heart disease.

The main idea: Cancer is catching up to heart disease.

Significance: This article is important, because obese people are at a higher risk for both heart disease and cancer. It can also affect anyone. It is important that people are informed on the history of the diseases and that they should get tested yearly. It is relevant because the numbers are constantly rising as time progresses. The longer people wait to get test for cancer, the less likely they are to get cured if they have it.

  1. Having more cancer than heart disease related deaths isn't really a terrible thing if the reason is that we are able to cure heart disease more effectively.
