Evan Daane- EpiPendimic

EpiPenishment

Summary- Mylan, the company that makes the life saving EpiPen, has just boosted the price from below a hundred dollars to over 600 dollars for a pack, each containing two pens. This now renders the pen, that is necessary for many people to live, almost inaccessible to the average man/woman. This is similar to how Martin Shkreli jacked up the prices 5000 percent on his HIV drug which many needed to live. Mylan claims that the price has "changed over time to better reflect the value the product provides." This sudden change has sparked much outrage from every person who has severe allergic reactions.

Synthesis- This incident is just another way that big corporations try and suck more money from the little man. Since they feed off people who need the drug, they have a market that can't protest by boycotting them because they'll die if they do. There needs to be some government regulation of life saving drug costs. They could go by material price of the drug and how expensive the ingredients are and then boost the price a certain percent under 15. That's just a suggestion. It might keep more of the Shkreli's and the Mylan's in check.

  1. My dad recently mentioned this during dinner the other night and i found this absolutely appalling. Not only is it a drawback to the average man and women but also lower class that have too much money, even though their living on pennies, to be considered for the "grants" or so called "donations" for those that are absolutely dirt poor. And then consider the mother that actually buys the epipen, doesn't use it within the year before expiration, then risks the effectiveness of the epipen, due to the expenses being too much.

  3. Big Pharma's use of supply and demand is almost inhumane. They can pretty much get away with whatever price they want to put on their products because people need them to live. I think if there were more companies competing for business in the pharmaceutical industry that would drive prices back down.

  5. This is ridiculous. There are so many people who have allergies in this world that could require immediate attention if activated. All this is going to do is cause a decrease in the amount of people who can afford to keep an EpiPen on them, which could result in severe allergic reactions and/or death.
