SUMMARY: On Thursday October 1st, the last known location of the El Faro cargo ship was taken down and then all contact was lost. Near this location it is known that Joaquin the hurricane was bearing down heavily with winds at over 130 mph. Onboard were around 33 people of American and Polish decent, who were heading to San Juan, Puerto Rico. The coast guard has said that conditions to search for survivors was only permitted beginning yesterday, meaning that any survivors left alive have been out at sea for 96 hours. Now that sounds nearly impossible but the ship was equipped with life boats that can hold 43 people and have rations and emergency kits. So it is possible.
ANALYSIS: This is truly an awful event, but I think that it is somewhat preventable. The ship knew its course ahead of time and Hurricane Joaquin had already begun to form well before Thursday. Now saying this I still think and hope that the survivors are hanging on until the coast guard can get to them. But with these kind of things, I think that there was some poor planning involved on this voyage and the captain and crews part. Had they known there was a hurricane in their way, I really doubt they would've thought "Hey, that sounds fun, lets go straight into a hurricane." Again my thoughts are with those families of the survivors and with the survivors themselves, I hope they hang on and are able to give the people in charge of their voyage a piece of their mind.
