At Spring Valley High School in South Carolina, Deputy Ben Fields is now under investigation for using excessive force on a young student. When a young student was told to leave by a teacher and refused, the teacher called for the police working at that building. When told to get up, she refused until Fields literally dragged her from her seat and threw her on the floor. Lately, the video and the hashtag #assualtatspringvalleyhigh have been trending in twitter especially by Black Lives Matter supporters.
Hearing another police officer abusing their power has become so frequent that this story did not shock me. Reading about these assaults remind me of the terrible treatment of African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement and frankly, we haven't left all of that in the past. The constant surge of news articles of police brutality proves that there is something wrong with the way these officer operate. I am thankful that we have so many people volunteering to out their lives on the line to keep civilians safe, but these stories are far too frequent.

It's so depressing that stories like this have become expected, yet are still overlooked.

I have seen the video of Officer Fields assaulting the student and things like this still shock me. I have read about brutality and assault by our leaders and the people meant to protect us, but each time I am reminded that there is someone out there who wants to harm people when they are meant to protect them, I cringe. The video is absolutely horrifying to watch. The officer drags her out of her desk and throws her on the floor with such force the students visibly cringe. Like many disputes in history, our authoritative figure could've handled it better. - Juliet Nelson 9
ReplyDeleteJuliet put my thoughts perfectly into words. The connection to the Civil Rights movement definitely demonstrates the repetition of history. I hope that something is done about the frequent police brutality headlines, so that black lives can truly be kept safe by the authoritative figures getting paid to do so.
