Recently Texas, North Carolina, and Alabama as well as many other states have tightened restrictions on voting in order to ensure that there are no illegal voters in their systems. States have shut down 31 motor vehicle offices, the main source of voter IDs for people there, due to "budgetary reasons". These restrictions have been especially severe in counties where there are a majority of minority voters, completely by coincidence of course.
This is blatant suppression of the rights of these people. It is as easily detectable as the gerrymandering in the early 1800's and it is essentially doing the same thing. It is manipulating the vote in favor of the right wingers and the worst part about it is there is absolutely nothing that is effective that these people can do. Everybody always goes on about how our country was built on the rights of people, but now in this day and age our rights and liberties are subject to the whims and fancies of our capitalist corporate overlords.

Good job Lincoln! I think it's really interesting with the connection to gerrymandering. - Gunnar Ozuna Period 6
ReplyDeleteIt is really frustrating that they are suppressing these voters' rights, but act like they are trying to protect elections by keeping out illegal voters. Although I am sure these actions do keep out some illegal voters, it also skews the votes and takes away peoples' rights. -Claudia Anthony
