Another high school football player has died. According to this article, Andre Smith of Illinois,died during the last play at his high school football game. he was a senior at Bogan High school. Near the end of the football game he hit his head really hard. although he was able to walk off the field, he collapsed later. he is the 7th to die from a high school football injury in the U.S. Last year there were 11 deaths related to high school football. 6 were indirect causes, 3 were heart related, 2 were caused by water intoxication and electrolyte imbalance.
Football has been a very important and influential sport in the U.S since the antebellum age. It has become a main event in our society and it is played by millions of kids across the country. I believe that it is time for new safety requirements and precautions in football in order to help prevent deaths like Andre's. We know more about the injuries that occur in football and the sports equipment makers should take these findings into account.
Football may be one of the most dangerous sports in the world. I agree that companies that are responsible for equipment should consider a redesign to help prevent further death of players. An upcoming movie titled Concussion, starring Will Smith, speaks of this risk to football players. I'm hoping this project will open up the people's eyes on the topic.

ReplyDeleteOne of the solutions to concussions and head injuries in football was the Smart Helmet. It basically alerts coaches when a player has been hit too hard and tells them whether or not to pull a player out of the game before it gets too serious. Paige Moore-Mitchell 8th period
