Guns on Campus?// Arianna Sotero 1st period

Summary: This article discusses the fact that in beginning in August of 2016, Texas will be the 8th state to allow guns on campus. Any student over the age of 21 with a license can carry gun on campus. UT Austin is featured in this featured in this video, and a student body president says that he disagrees with UT's allowance of guns on their campus. UT's professors feel the same way. There have been many professors protesting this rule stating that they shouldn't worry of upsetting a student in fear of getting hurt by them. In fact, there has already been one resignation because of this rule. It also discusses that students have a right to feel safe and to protect themselves.

Analysis: In the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, it states, Americans have "a right to keep and bear arms".  So why is it such a heated discussion of why guns should be allowed on campus? Isn't that our right? There have been so many on-campus shootings and so many people have died, something needs to change. Yes, we do have a right to defend ourselves but if so many events like these keep happening, we can't not making any changes.

  1. Its very controversial because although it makes some students feel safe because they can protect themselves, it makes other students feel uncomfortable because they are worried about their safety at their own school. Students should be able to feel comfortable on their own campus, however, by allowing college students to bear arms it does the complete opposite.

  2. It doesn't make college students feel safe in any way. College students already make plenty of stupid mistakes in college and now some of those people could be carrying guns. Also it's not just students and professors who are against this the colleges are two. Almost every public state school has tried to find ways to limit the extent to which these laws can be enacted including restricting where some areas can have guns. I also think this is an especially big slap in the face to the University of Texas who was victim to one of the earliest and deadliest mass shootings in our countries history when charles whitman killed 16 and wounded 32 others back in 1966

There isn't any protection in open carry on campus. This is the complete opposite of being safe. Yes, there are school shootings and students need to be protected, so hire some extra security. Like it says, the teachers fear for their lives just by having to give students bad grades. And might I point out that it says students that are 21 and over so that is only about 50% of the school that might be allowed to if they have a license. Letting students carry guns will lead to rash decisions in which a lot of people could die. This accomplishes the complete opposite of what they are thinking that this will. This is only going to lead to more destruction and shootings.
