Another boat capsized this week, but this time, many survived. Turkish fishermen rescued many of the migrants in the water, including an 18 month-old baby named Mohammad. A video shows Cenap Gumren pulling Mohammad up and trying to get the water out of his lungs. Thanks to Gumren, Mohammad is alive and healthy.
While this particular story had a happy ending, the dangers facing refugees are still very real. Too many boats have been found empty and not enough is being done to help immigrants. The hostile attitude towards immigrants has become very common, especially in America. So many conveniently forget that this is a nation built on immigrants searching for a better life. We look back at the Founding Fathers's generation and how brave they were to make the dangerous journey to America, but don't see that that's the exact same thing that's happening now. Just like back then, many feel superior because their ancestors have been here longer and are discriminating against anyone who doesn't have the same privilege.
