Recently a tunnel was found in San Diego California that was
connected to drug smuggling. The elaborate tunnel was equipped with lighting,
electricity, a railway system, and beams made of metal to prevent cave-ins. 6
million dollars worth of marijuana, 12 tons, was confiscated form these tunnels
and over 20 were arrested. This bust was a part of a 6 month undercover
investigation, resulting in a shut down of the tenth biggest drug tunnel found
in San Diego since 2006. Thankfully the tunnel was shut down in time on
Wednesday and hopefully the U.S. government will be able to control this more.
While it sucks that there was a tunnel with 12 tons of weed
in it, maybe it’s a wake up call the United States to step up it’s game a
little bit. Now that can go two ways, both can sound drastic. The government
either needs to find a way to shut down every tunnel so this isn’t a problem,
which sounds hard, or they could legalize weed and be able to make a profit off
of it. I don’t smoke but I also don’t think that it’s fair to have marijuana be
illegal. If the U.S. was able to capitalize off of the selling of weed it would
help our debt issues and no one will want to buy illegal weed when they can get
it perfectly legally. Just with any other import or export there does need to
be regulations, obviously, but legalizing weed could very possible help America.
It’s working in Colorado and it can work everywhere else too.

I agree. Why should the US stress about drug smuggling when they could be making money off of it?

This may be a stretch but this reminds me a lot of the underground railroad.
ReplyDeleteCigarettes and alcohol are so much more deadly so why are they legal and this isn't? Legally, drugs are such a messy thing, how do they determine what's legal and whats illegal. It really takes into question how powerful the government should be. Since in my opinion the government's main concern is to protect the people, the only reason drugs should be illegal is if they cause people to be violent or cause harm to others.
ReplyDeletePeople are going to drugs regardless of what we want, legalize drugs like marijuana just gives us more opportunity to monitor their distribution and use.
ReplyDeleteIt seems pointless to think about this, I agree with you. If the US legalized weed and sold all of this it would help not only helping the economy, but also the national dept. You can't stop people from using drugs, but through legalization you can more closely monitor the distribution.
ReplyDeleteIt's an interesting point you make that these tunnels wouldn't have to exist if they just legalized weed. It's quite a predicament.

I recently watched a 60 minutes segment on a Mexican drug lord who it famous for building tunnels to smuggle drugs. He also used tunnels to secretly leave his house, and twice to escape from maximum security prisons. The reporter was saying that these tunnels, since they are so deep under ground, are very hard for law enforcement to detect, so congratulations to those officers who found it.
ReplyDeleteI feel like shutting down all the tunnels would be impossible. I also think that legalizing weed in every state would be hard to control.Colorado is still in the middle of figuring out how it works and they even still have to pay in cash to buy their "medicine" because the banks won't accept that money in checks.
