The recent cold weather in northern america has led to what is essentially an "aquatic tornado" in the great lakes. It is likely that we will see a lot more of these after the Canadian cold front travels to the south. Because the cold front was so sudden, the lake is still warm which is what caused the waterspouts. Cold wind and warm water begins to form these water explosions!
I think this is pretty cool... it isn't necessarily a bad thing that should be fixed. It is one of natures wonders that we can sit back and watch without any panic. Mother nature coming in CLUTCH!!! (:
