Legal hunts for elephants sparks debate
by Adrianna Martinez
An elephant between 40 and 60 years old was shot on October 8 by a German hunter, who paid $60,000 for the hunt. Although the killing of the elephant was legal many despise the murdering of these majestic animals. This past month, Zimbabwe lost dozens of elephants due to poaching and the death of this elephant has only sparked more anger and frustration for conservationists. Professional guides and conservationists both agree through photo safaris and tourism the elephant would have made more money alive than dead. Hunters argue that regulated hunting is legal and it brings much needed money to the communities. There needs to be a ban on hunting in the national parks located in Africa. The killing of majestic animals as trophies is disgusting and it can lead the creatures to become extinct. This is similar to the extinction of the dodo bird, hunting was one of the reasons that contributed to the demise of this species.
