Sadie Schiermeyer Police Brutality

Police just released the body-camera video of the officer Philip “Mitch” Brailsford who was charged with second-degree murder and reckless manslaughter. This happened in January 2016, when Brailsford shot a clearly intoxicated Daniel Shaver in a hotel hallway after receiving a call claiming Shaver had a gun. There was debate whether Brailsford’s actions were justified. The video shows Shaver’s innocence, yet Brailsford’s actions followed his training. Nevertheless, Brailsford was acquitted. Now, celebrities and activists are speaking out to say this man's death was unjust.

The law will always have problems, no matter how much we change it and mess with it. However, it is in cases like these where it is no longer a matter of the law but simply of police brutality. Brailsford had no reason to shoot this man. Situations like this have happened many times before yet no one is making any attempts to try and come up with a better solution. Either they need a new rule in training to not shoot immediately or they need to be more thorough while investigating the situation.

  1. I completely agree. This honestly angers me because there are so many cases where officers have shot unarmed black men and judged them because of the color of their skin. Our justice system is so unjust and we have the power to change it if we come together and FIGHT.
