"2 Killed in West Virginia Mine Where Safety Lapses Were Cited" (Melissa Kurtzman, 5th Period)

Summary: On Monday, two coal miners were killed in an accident at a mine where various safety violations have been noted in the past. The company blamed a "severe coal burst" as the cause of the deaths. The mine has a history of safety violations that have received federal citations in the past. Safety  records show that the mine has been cited 46 times since 2011 for unwarrantable failure to comply with safety rules.
Analysis: It's very frustrating that this mine has been cited so many times for safety violations but hasn't done anything about it. I hope that the safety officials become involved very soon and impose necessary measures to ensure the safety of the mine in the future. I send my thoughts and prayers out to the families of the victims of the accident.

  1. People sometimes get a false sense of security because they think that disasters such as these are rare and, therefore, will not happen to them. Hopefully this will show people the importance of complying to all safety standards no matter how trivial they may seem.
