New curbs on oil and gas exploration in Arctic waters off Alaska's northern coast announced by the US government. The Royal Dutch Shell stopped its Arctic activity after " disappointing " tests. Shell has spent about $7bn on Arctic offshore development in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas. The US Geological Survey estimates that the Arctic holds about 30% of the world's undiscovered natural gas and 13% of its oil. Since the price of gas is low right now, Shell is drawing back from drilling in the Arctic and this announcement was welcomed among environmentalists. Environmental groups argue that fossil fuels such as oil and gas must be left in the ground if the world is to avoid runaway climate change.
Remember Spindletop? An east Texas oil Field produced 80,000 barrels a day and changed the country and oil production forever. That is the origin of our oil obsessed country. Oil is now the dominant fuel of the 20th century and the plentiful supplies of oil made the US rank in great power accelerate. Because of the high dependency on oil, America must find alternatives for sources of energy or change its ways of living.
Oil is a non-renewable resource, meaning it cannot produce itself to keep up with human rate of extraction. Americans are materialistic, we need or cars, our fancy clothes, cellphones, etc. But so many people don't care or don't know that this is really hurting our environment, our home. But some oil companies need to produce more oil or their workers lose jobs. How do we get out of this rut?
