Original article here: "Winter Poses New Danger for Migrants"
Despite their ability to overcome government-made security and geographic obstacles, the migrants coming into European countries, such as Hungary, from Croatia, have a big storm coming for them. Winter is on its way and a lot of these people will not be able to sustain themselves in this new, tough weather. In the Balkans, where a lot of the migrants are, the temperatures will drop fiercely, and there will be heavy snow and freezing rain thrust upon them. Additionally, a lot of these people will lack the resources they need to stay alive- food and shelter. And now, another complication has arisen- the border in between Hungary and Croatia is closing.
In the winter of 1609, the settlers of Jamestown had a similar problem. No, the border in between Virginia and Britain wasn't closed, but they were still migrants, and still had to endure the winter, also known as "starving time." Before the winter, there had been a pretty bad drought that left the colonists with little resources, making the winter even more unbearable due to the fact that there was little food. During this time, a lot of people starved, and the colony almost disappeared. One neat example of the lengths colonists would go to for nourishment is that one winter, a man killed his wife, preserved her body with salt, and ate her. I'm sure that the Croatian migrants won't go as far as to eat their family members, but hey, desperate times call for desperate measures.

Good comparison! crazy how people today have similar problems to those that existed in 1609

ReplyDeleteThe fact that some people have to worry about winter is sad. Hopefully they will pull through
In today's world it is sad and surprising that some people still have instability in winter
