Deputy and Criminal Both Dead- Isabella Montague

In Minnesota, Danny Hammond, who was already charged of various felonies, took his wife and held her at gunpoint. She managed to escape with many injuries and called police. When police got to Danny Hammond, he was in very bad condition due to an attempt of suicide he made. He was being treated at a hospital for a while and started showing signs of improvement until early Sunday when he managed to grab Deputy Steven Sandburg's gun, and he fired several shots, killing Sandburg. Other officers came into the room and tazered Sandburg, who later died in the hospital, despite life-saving efforts from nurses.

This is a chaotic and sad story, with two people killed. I think that it is very interesting that when asked to make a statement for police, Hammond's wife made it very clear that she asked for no one to pray for her and her son, but that instead she was praying for the family of Steven Sandburg. I inderstand why she would say this, because it was her husband who shot Sandburg, and while they were married for twelve years, he has recently abducted her and held her at gunpoint. Officers stationed at hospitals should be very careful with their guns, even if they think they are safer since they are in a place of sick people. The death of Hammond would be hard to avoid, he had a gun so he had to be tazered, and probably died of cardiac arrest. Gun control has been an issue for a long time in America, and so has problems dealing with domestic violence, which occurred in the Hammond family.

  1. I began reading your summary thinking it was a story about a criminal with bad intentions, but it relates to a bigger picture; gun control and domestic violence. How did an individual with many felonies have possession of a gun? Was he given a license before or after his crimes? This is horrible and could have been avoided with tighter revisions to current gun regulations. - Brenna Hale(6th Period)
