3D printers have had a breakthrough. A four year old named Mia constantly had colds and pneumonia and because of this had to miss out on her dance classes and playing outside with her friends at daycare. When Mia's mom took her to the hospital she was told that Mia had an abnormality to her heart and would require open heart surgery. To help Mia's parents understand the surgery and even help the doctors who would be operating on Mia to practice and visualize what they would be doing, Dr. Redmond Burke created a 3D model of Mia's heart. Without the model Mia would have been deemed "inoperable." Instead quite the opposite occurred. Mia had her operation and because of the model, had less recovery time and a smaller scar. In the future doctors hope to create printers that instead of printing with plastic they will print with human cells and would therefore, doctors could actually implant the 3D printed organ. The amount of success stories like Mia's are growing and creating hope for the future of technology and medicine.
I think that we are making great progress with this new 3D printer. If successful, there would be no more waiting lines for organ donors. Mia is only 4 and an say she has had a successful open heart surgery. This story relates back to apush because it shows how far we have come in medicine. We can now print models of human organs.

That is really awesome! It's is great to see how 3D printers can help people like that. Since most people learn visually, 3D printers give that visual representation of what they will have to do, which will make the actual process easier. It is interesting that they want to make a 3D print out with human cells. We could do so much with that!
