Opioid Epidemic May be Underestimated by Macey Kanaman

Summary: The United States is facing an opioid epidemic, averaging 91 overdoses a day. Although this number could be underestimated. Over half the deaths caused by opioids were not included in Minnesota's total between 2006 and 2011. People who use opioids have a likely chance of getting pneumonia, this is why many people are not included in the states total of deaths caused by opioids. Their cause of death is titled pneumonia instead of opioids. This happens quite often and could be the reason why it's being underestimated.

Analysis: This article was very informative and eye opening. The opioid epidemic is an extremely big problem and I think there should be more done. Instead of placing people in jail for possession of drugs they should be placed in rehab where they can get help. I am synthesizing this to before people kept records. How would anyone know if there was a drug problem with no way of keeping record? Were they even drugs pre 20th century? I doubt they had a way of keeping data so they didn't acknowledge whether or not there was a problem. As we have developed as a society we have developed new ideas and things have become important to us such as keeping data of opioid overdoses, which is something the settlers in 1607 were probably not worried about.

  1. Interesting! Our drug issue could be much worse than we imagined. We all need to say no to drugs now!
