Madeline Jones 4th Period: 1,000 Year Floods

South Carolina was hit with a massive rainfall on Sunday leaving roads unsafe. Officials were forced to warn people to not leave their homes for any reason at all. South Carolina's Governor, Nikki Haley, stated, "We haven't seen this level of rain in the Low Country in 1,000 years. Thats how big this is."
More than 250 roads were closed across South Carolina due to flooding. This storm had left over two feet of rain. South Carolina schools and businesses will be closed Monday and possibly Tuesday for safety.
Four people have already been announced dead all over South Carolina since Thursday. Not only South Carolina, but parts of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Virginia have been under coastal flood warnings since Sunday. The effects of this storm could last long into this week.
In April of 1927, the Mississippi River flooding was the most destructive flood ever to occur in the United States. The flood left 500 people dead and 600,000 homeless. The flooding occurred across Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana. 16 million acres of land was full of water from the Mississippi River.
Flood warnings are linked to the Flood Forecast. One of the major changes in Flash Flood warnings in the United States over the past decade, is the number of communities that have put into affect warning systems. Flash Flood warnings have improved over the years in America. For example, drainage basins have been placed all over many countries throughout America. A drainage basin is an area of land where surface water from rain or melting snow drains into a lower elevation spot.
