post:Volunteer Rebels? Tennessee County votes Monday to raise Confederate flag - CNN.com
Summary: The confederate flag was a symbol for those apart of the confederacy during the civil war period. Now 150 years later, in Greene County, they are now considering flying the rebel flag. Randolph claims it commemorates the heritage of the south, and that in honors those who fought in the civil war. However other oppose him, like Hood, who see his opinion of the confederate flag distorted. The land they plan to fly it on was actually pro-union and considered enemy territory by the confederacy. THere will be a vote ot determine whether or not it will fly.
Analysis: This relates back to US history through the connection of the civil war. The confederacy advocated for slavery, one of the reasons why the civil war was fought. Obviously, the effects of slavery are long lasting, evident through the Jim Crow Laws/Segregation that followed during the reconstruction period, and even today, racial discrimination takes place everywhere from applying to jobs/coolleges, to racial profiling. It is almost impossible to see that flag and not relate it with racism, racist organizations (like the Ku Klux Klan) and racist figures (like Dylan Roof). It also relates to US history in the fact that it dispells a common myth. Until the reading of this article, one may assume that all states in the south advocated for succession and slavery. However, this country, in the middle of the confederacy actually rebelled against the southern ideals of that time. Lastly it relates to US history in the form of democracy. Instead of one leader putting their personal beliefs in front of others, it will be handled using opinions of the people, just like any other political matter would, as democracy is one of the main principles of this country.
