Anti-Semitic Shooting -Cleo Chaney

original Article: https://www.npr.org/2019/04/28/718043171/poway-shooting-latest-in-series-of-attacks-on-places-of-worship

On Saturday, during the Passover service at Poway synagogue, a gunman killed one person and injured three. It's the latest in a series of hate crimes in places of worship and shows the tensions between different groups of people existing today.

The shooter was a 19-year old nursing student. I read the manifesto that it is said he had written and what I found was this: He believes that Jewish people are masterminding the "genocide"of what he calls "the European race." And he believes every single Jewish person is partially responsible for this; he says they "act as a unit." To completely demonize and alienate an entire ethnicity seems crazy, but his feeling about Jewish people is not unique, and anti-semitism has been moving back into the spotlight these past few years, though I don't believe it ever disappeared. He cites the death of Simon of Trent, a child who was suspected to be killed by a Jewish family that led to the arrest of every Jewish person in the 1475 city and the torture and murder of eight Jewish people and a mythic lie about Jews that has been used against them all throughout history.

It's radical. It's putting Jewish people in the role of scapegoat again. It sounds ridiculous, but it's serious, serious enough that people kill for it.

I can only hope that no other awful, evil racist is inspired by this man's actions, and that every one can stay safe while still having the freedom to practice their own faiths. I can also hope for gun control to stop arms from entering the hands of men like this.

  1. It’s crazy that people are going back to discriminating against Jewish people and this needs to stop now before it gets way out of hand
