Activists and Suicide Prevention Groups Seek Bans on Conversion Therapy for Minors - Miranda Farrar

Today, only 16 states have banned conversion therapy, but organizations and groups are pushing to establish legislation to ban it in more states. In Georgia, those who support the ban are trying to pass House Bill 580, which would ban conversion therapy for minors. This article follows the stories of a few people, Peter Nunn and Greg and Lynn McDonald. Greg and Lynn talk about their experience of finding out their son was gay, and learning to accept him and eventually oppose conversion therapy. Peter Nunn went through conversation therapy, specifically electroshock therapy.  This article talks about different kinds of conversation therapy, the psychological effects, such as increased suicide rate, and groups that oppose conversion therapy. Conversion therapy has proven to not change a person's sexuality; it is just harmful, and medical professionals denounce it.

This article was written by someone who seems to oppose conversion therapy, because the stories that are included are people who also oppose it. In addition, it lists all the negative effects of it. With this being said, it is still factual, not opinionated. This article was written on April 26, 2019. Many people forget that there is still a lot of homophobia present today, and it's extremely harmful to the LGBTQ+ community, especially young kids. This article was written to decrease that ignorance and expose the negative practices that are going on today. Unfortunately, much of history that is related to the community is erased. For example, we learned about the Red Scare, but our textbook never mentioned the Lavender Scare- the persecution against gay people in the 1950s, where many were fired from their jobs by the government. Since people refuse to tell us about these things that have happened, it's our job to find out the truth and not remain ignorant.

  1. Emma Burkey: Textbooks ignoring important history, such as the Lavender Scare, is appalling in itself. I hope that all conversion therapy is banned from the U.S. because no one should be put through physical of psychological pain just because they are being themselves.
