Mohammed Hamzah Khan, a 19 resident of Chicago, was arrested at O'Hare Airport while attempting to fly to Turkey, and eventually be funneled to Syria. He told the FBI that he was to answer a phone call once he arrived, and that would lead him to the people bringing him across the border. He left a three page note for his family explaining what he was doing and asking them to join him in the Jihad. This was found with other incriminating evidence in his room in his family's house. ISIS is using social media to recruit Westerners and other foreigners to their cause, however the US says it is combating this through statements by Islamic Clerics denouncing ISIS and declaring them a perversion of Islam.
This situation is similar to the Communist and Anarchist movements of the 20th Century, in which radical groups and the Soviet Union recruited Westerners to their cause, usually to fight against the US. It is also similar in some ways to the American Revolution, in which the Americans waged war against the English, sometimes with the aid of foreigners, such as Von Steuben and the Marquis de Laffayette, though they did not use terror or brutality as a weapon.

Wow.... And it reflects previous historical events, especially those of terrorism (obviously), and brings up the topic of migration.
