A nurse in Spain has contracted Ebola after treating a Spanish missionary and a Spanish priest, both of whom had contracted Ebola in West Africa. Both died after returning to Spain. She is the first person to get the disease outside of Africa although she and 30 other people are said to have treated the two Ebola victims. Fear of the virus is growing among U.S citizens. "As I've said from the start of this outbreak, I consider this a top national security priority. This is not just a matter of charity ... This is an issue about our safety," President Barack Obama told reporters Monday regarding the crisis.
While reading this article by Ben Brumfield and Josh Levs of CNN, I noticed differences and similarities between the bubonic plague and our now Ebola virus. I believe this virus has the potential to wipe out millions of people, but to our advantage, we have already experienced and learned from such an event like this. Some may believe the time taken to find the disease in individuals outside of Libya was too long, but it is a lot quicker than how long it would've taken years ago. We know the outcome of this disease if we let it out of control, and we know how to prevent most of it. We have a few people in the country who have been affected but we have disease control centers focusing on the individuals to prevent any spreading of the Ebola virus.

ReplyDeleteUnlike the Plague, I think that we will be able to contain Ebola. At the same time there is no known cure, but with modern medicine people have a much higher chance of surviving. In Africa they do not have that luxury so it is important that we send supplies over there to help.
ReplyDeleteI just learned that there is not cure for ebola, so this is quite frightening, I trust the U.S. will keep it contained.
