Good Morning America received a picture of a woman waiting tables with her son strapped to her back. They followed up and interviewed her. They discovered that the mother has a different primary occupation, but sometimes picks up shifts at a local dinner as necessary. There had been a power outage and when the electricity came back on the diner had filled with customers, so the owner called up this mother. She was happy to come in but didn't have time to find a sitter, so she just brought her son with her. This was the second time for this to happen and the owner knew her son would behave. It was said that her son enjoys helping out around the restaurant as much as he can.
The audience for this article is most prominently working moms because they can find a connection to the piece. This is an important piece to take note of because this is the way situations of this nature should be handled. Many moms face the same dilemma on a regular bases, whether it be due to not being financially able to hire child care or purely time-based issues. They are forced to choose between getting money to provide for their child in the long run or staying with their child to provide for the now. No mother should have to make those kinds of decisions. Unfortunately, without making a major change in the child care system, this example is one of the best ways to face the issue. An understanding boss makes all the difference. This can be related to a study done by professor McGinn of Harvard in 2015 that shows how children benefit from working moms. Not only is this child learning how much his mother is willing to work for his benefit, but he is learning what a good work ethic looks like. This helps set him up for a driven future that is soon to make his mother proud.

ReplyDeleteWomen in the workplace need more recognition like this! She is a super hero!
ReplyDeleteSiobhan is right, she is a super hero! It is very difficult for many women to juggle their families and their professions, especially if they are a single mother. Hopefully with improvements either in childcare or in workplace norms regarding children, more women will be less stretched and their lives will become easier.

I agree with Siobhan there are so many strong women in this world that are getting recognized.
ReplyDeleteIt must be very difficult to keep up with a family and a job as a single mother. This is inspiring.
