Leslie Vasquez- Trump and America's Stake in El Salvador's Security

Ever since Reagan's administration support El Salvador's militia in its civil war thirty years ago, the U.S. has been involved in El Salvador's security. As of recently, our current president believes that the U.S. should stop supporting El Salvador due to his belief that every young male Salvadoran immigrant is part of the MS-13: a violent gang that wreaks havoc in El Salvador, and also because of his rhetoric that immigrants are not allowed in the United States. This has made securing El Salvador a lot harder, considering that innocent Salvadorans depend on American assistance to survive at some times. For those that are already in the U.S., they feel conflicted by how Trump views immigrants from El Salvador. The reason they came to the U.S. was to survive and live, not be in a gang they fled from in the first place.

Reading this article hit home for me. Although my family didn't flee from El Salvador because of the MS-13 specifically, it is still a reality for many other Salvadorans. This article shows how much xenophobia can affect a group's way of life. Trump's view of immigrants impacts them greatly, whether they're in the United States or not. I feel like the U.S. should try to hold out their aid a little longer, considering that they've been helping El Salvador since its civil war in 1980.

  2. I think we overlook El Salvador and a ton of other Central American countries because we talk so much about Mexico. There are so many other countries that also have corruption and danger but because of the xenophobia towards Latinos they’re grouped in with Mexico and both Mexico and those countries are being denied help.
