Supreme Court Ducks Effort To Defund Planned Parenthood - Miranda Farrar

Recently, the Supreme Court has refused to address a Republican-led case that has the goal to defund Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood. This is not about federal money funding abortion-related services, as that is not allowed by federal law. These states are trying to defund Medicaid funding for the sole reason that Planned Parenthood offers these services amongst many others, including cancer screenings, birth control, and ultrasounds. The Supreme Court's decision suggests that with the confirmation of Kavanaugh and two new justices, the court wants to lay low for a while. The decision also goes back to an edited viral video that put Planned Parenthood in a bad light, and the organization sued states who removed funding for them from Medicaid. Of course, everyone has different opinions on the court's decision, but the president of Planned Parenthood expressed a positive reaction to the decision.

Abortion is a very controversial subject, and I understand that some people don't agree with it. However, it seems unnecessary that states are trying to get rid of healthcare that provides that one particular service among many. Planned Parenthood is known for abortions, but it's other services are overlooked. Moreover, they are services for low-income women. This is rare, seeing as healthcare is widely known for being expensive. As for the Supreme Court's decision, it seems to be working pretty well. The decision lies in the hands of lower courts, and the Supreme Court will avoid excess attention.

  1. This decision surprises me greatly. Due to this being the first fully republican court in a while, I was expecting the Supreme Court to jump right on all the contested social issue casss and resolve all of those in the party’s favor. That would worry me greatly seeing as being a gay man, many cases regarding my rights are on the table, along with many others.

  2. I forgot to add that the president of Planned Parenthood spoke of everyone deserving healthcare. During Reconstruction, the Freedmen's Bureau was created to provide that, among other services, to freed slaves.
