On Saturday, 73019 fans came out to watch the MLS Cup final between the Portland Timbers and the Atlanta United. In just their second season as a team, Atlanta beat Portland 2-0 with goals in the 39th and 54th minutes and won the title previously held by Toronto FC. This eventful game was bittersweet for the Atlanta United as there Argentinean coach, Gerardo Martino, leaves the two year old team with their first, and likely not their last, MLS Cup win. Even after the departure of their coach, the Atlanta team will go into next season full of confidence and ready to tackle the challenges every team faces, new or old.
A monumental first for another young team came a little while back when, in 1991, the 6 year old United States Women's National team won the very first Women's World Cup. Come 2019, the Atlanta United could possibly be playing in the next MLS Cup and the top ranking United States Women's National Team will be heading off to France to compete in the Women's World Cup. I hope that both teams set new records and win new titles, but more importantly, I hope to see other young teams like Atlanta changing the world of soccer whether it be in the Bundesliga, the Mexican Primera División, or at home with USA Major League Soccer.
