Given that this is my last current event of 2018, a rather mixed bag of a year, I wanted to end on something positive or at least amusing. As virtually everyone knows now, the trailer for Avengers: Endgame dropped last week. It was understandably huge news after the cliff hanger of infinity war. Many fans voiced their excitement and enthusiasm in all sorts of ways. Many theorized about the predicaments our heroes are in and how they will escape. A few however went further, taking it upon themselves to beseech NASA to rescue Tony Stark who was trapped in a space ship in the trailer. There ended up being so many requests that NASA had to formally ask people to stop requesting they rescue Tony Stark.
I, like many others, found this story amusing and a welcome reprieve from the depressing news that constantly surrounds us. This may seem an odd connection to make, but the hype surrounding this film reminds me of the era of the new deal. People's hopes and expectations both then and now were unreasonably high. People wanted a solution but they also didn't want accept any plan less than perfect. It's the same way with marvel fans. The movies we're demanding are only growing more complicated and our expectations are soaring regardless of whether its realistic to expect such things. However, at least in this case millions of people are not relying on this for their lives.
