This Saturday, a snowstorm blew through Lubbock, Texas and the southern portion of Oklahoma, in some place depositing up to 10 inches of snow, which is two more inches than any of the surrounding regions collect annually. The storm however, is now moving east towards the Appalachians and into the Carolinas, where its expected to grow and deposit much more snow, around 16-18 inches. Authorities have already begun preparations for the storm, and over 1000 flights have been canceled. Some Appalachian communities are even expected to experience record amounts of snow. Meteorologists see this as highly unusual, as storms of this scale usually don't occur in any of these regions until mid to late January.
To me this is just another example of the chaos caused by global warming. Although freezing blizzards seem like the opposite of global warming, random, out-of-season large scale storms like these are the product of uneven and unnatural weather patterns affected throughout the year by global warming. Unfortunately, most of the damage has already been done, but to prevent even more catastrophic storms, hurricanes and drastic temperature changes, we have to come together to solve the issues of climate change, which affect billions of people around the world every day, as well as our natural ecosystems.
